How to measure ID

Measure the pipe, not the old hose

Heat and age make a used hose swell and go out of round. Take your reading across the metal outlet the hose slides onto — that measurement is your ID.

Use vernier calipers

Set the outer jaws across the widest point of the pipe. A tape measure round a curve reads low by a millimetre or two — enough to buy the wrong size.

Take three readings, keep the largest

Rotate 60° between each. If they disagree the pipe is oval; size to the biggest figure so the hose still seals.

Round to the nearest listed bore

Never go up: a bore wider than the fitting will not grip, whatever the hose is made of. If you land between listed sizes take the smaller bore, and secure it with a clip.

Order by ID, always. Every hose on this site is listed by internal diameter. OD is given for clearance only — it changes with wall thickness and ply count, so it is never the ordering size. On reducers, quote both ends, largest first.

What is it, and what does it fit?

The oil cooler to coolant rail hose for the Land Rover TD5 engine - Defender 1987-2006 and Discovery with TD5 engines. It is listed against OE part number PBH101980.

Why replace the original?

The original rubber part is a known failure on this engine. This is a 3 ply reinforced silicone reducer, and on a part that is awkward to reach and messy when it lets go, the silicone version should outlast the vehicle.

How is it constructed?

3 ply reinforced silicone, built to SAE J20 R3. The size table on this page lists the exact bore, wall thickness, working and burst pressure, bend radius and length for the part.

Is it oil resistant?

Yes - this is oil-side silicone rated for the duty, which is why it goes where an ordinary coolant hose would swell and soften.

Does it come with clips?

Two clips are offered as an option at checkout. Take them - the clips that come off a twenty year old Land Rover have usually had their best day, and renewing them costs less than doing the job twice.

Is it a straightforward fit?

It is a direct replacement, so it goes back the way the old one came out. Access is the awkward part rather than the hose itself. Have a tray under it, because whatever is in the old one is coming out with it.
