How to measure ID

Measure the pipe, not the old hose
Heat and age make a used hose swell and go out of round. Take your reading across the metal outlet the hose slides onto — that measurement is your ID.

Use vernier calipers
Set the outer jaws across the widest point of the pipe. A tape measure round a curve reads low by a millimetre or two — enough to buy the wrong size.

Take three readings, keep the largest
Rotate 60° between each. If they disagree the pipe is oval; size to the biggest figure so the hose still seals.

Round to the nearest listed bore
Never go up: a bore wider than the fitting will not grip, whatever the hose is made of. If you land between listed sizes take the smaller bore, and secure it with a clip.
Order by ID, always. Every hose on this site is listed by internal diameter. OD is given for clearance only — it changes with wall thickness and ply count, so it is never the ordering size. On reducers, quote both ends, largest first.

What is it used for?

Carrying liquefied petroleum gas from a cylinder or tank to an appliance - patio heaters, barbecues, catering equipment, caravans and motorhomes, plant and industrial burners.

What size and length do I order?

Order by internal diameter, matched to the outside diameter of the pipe stub or spigot it slides over. Measure the pipe with vernier callipers rather than the old hose, which stretches in service and reads large. Available in internal diameters from 5mm to 13mm, lengths from 1 Metre to 100 Metres (Full Coil). Full coils work out considerably better value per metre than cut lengths.

What standard is it built to?

It is manufactured to ISO 3821. Buying to a recognised standard matters here - it means the construction, pressure rating and performance have been benchmarked rather than simply described.

Why is it date stamped?

Because LPG hose degrades with age even when it looks sound. The stamp tells you when it was made and therefore when it is due for replacement - commonly five years, but check the appliance manufacturer's requirement. No legible date means replace it now.

How do I check for a leak?

Brush washing-up liquid and water over every joint with the gas on and the appliance off. Bubbles mean a leak. Never test with a flame. If you find one, turn off at the cylinder, do not operate electrical switches, ventilate the area and do not use the appliance until it is fixed.

How should it be secured?

Proper gas hose clips at each end, positioned squarely over the nozzle - never rely on a push fit. Then leak-test every joint with soapy water before use.
