What is a silicone elbow used for?
A silicone elbow lets you change the direction of a hose run without kinking it. It is used wherever a pipe or hose has to turn a corner in a tight space - intercooler and turbo pipework, radiator and coolant routing, air intakes, breathers, marine and industrial fluid transfer. Using a moulded elbow instead of bending a straight hose keeps the bore round, so flow is not restricted and the hose will not collapse under vacuum.

Which angle do I need - 45, 90, 135 or 180 degrees?
Measure the angle between the two pipe stubs you are joining. 45 degrees is a gentle change of direction, 90 degrees is a right-angle turn, 135 degrees is a shallow return, and 180 degrees is a full U-turn back on itself. If you are between two sizes, the more open angle is usually the better choice - silicone will flex a little to take up the difference, but forcing an elbow into a tighter angle than it was moulded for puts permanent stress on the joint.

How do I work out what size elbow to order?
Order by the internal diameter (ID) of the elbow, which must match the outside diameter of the metal pipe or stub it slides onto. Measure the pipe itself, not the hose you are replacing, and measure across the outside with vernier callipers. Our standard silicone elbows run from 6mm up to 102mm ID across thirty sizes. If your two pipe stubs are different sizes, use a reducing elbow instead - our 45 and 90 degree reducers cover pairings from 16mm to 13mm right up to 127mm to 90mm.

How long are the legs on your silicone elbows?
It varies by angle. The 45 and 90 degree elbows have 150mm legs each side, giving 300mm total. The 135 and 180 degree elbows have 100mm legs, giving 200mm total. The Fuel & Oil Long Leg elbows are the outlier with 300mm legs and 600mm total, available from 13mm to 76mm ID - those are the ones to choose when you need real reach. You can trim a leg down with a sharp blade, but leave enough straight section for the clip to seat on.

What temperature and pressure will they handle?
Our standard polyester-reinforced silicone elbows are built to SAE J20 R3 and operate continuously from -50C to +250C. Working pressure depends on bore size - around 12.33 bar on the smallest diameters down to about 2.8 bar on the largest - with burst pressures up to 37 bar, roughly three times the working figure. The wrapped classic-finish elbows use a different construction and are rated -60C to +180C with a +200C peak. Can I use a standard silicone elbow for fuel or oil?
No. Standard silicone is excellent with coolant, water and air, but it will swell and break down in contact with petrol, diesel or oil. For any hydrocarbon you need our Fuel & Oil elbows, which have a fluorosilicone inner layer built to SAE J30 R6 and are compatible with fuel, oil and fuel vapour including E5 and E10 pump fuel.
